About Us
Geek
Those people who are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and, perhaps, a little obsessive in the pursuit of their passions
(/ɡiːk/) noun
The Highland Geek Council is a collection of businesses and organisations, operating in and around Highland County, and with common interests relating to all forms of geekdom. We are dedicated to the promotion & expansion of geek culture through the Highlands. We provide opportunities and resources to facilitate networking, community building, and targeted marketing, especially for our member organisations, but also for the Highland Geek Community at large.
This group was inspired by—and owes much to—the Portland Geek Council of Commerce & Culture (PGC3) in Portland, Oregon (USA). Our founder, Abigail Carey, served on the PGC3 board for two years and witnessed first-hand the vital role it played in the local community. Founded in 2010, the PGC3 operated for nearly two decades before concluding that its mission had been fulfilled and that Portland’s geek culture had become self-sustaining. Over the years, the council hosted monthly and annual events, encouraging member organisations to engage with the community and promote themselves through fun, inclusive activities.
It is the goal of the Highland Geek Council to continue in the same vein—to foster a community where individuals feel empowered to be their truest selves, to encourage the open sharing of passions, and to serve as a unifying force among the businesses and organisations that support and celebrate geek culture.
As it is laid out in our bylaws, the Highland Geek Council's objectives include the following:

To begin and maintain an ongoing community dialogue between geek organisations and businesses in and around Highland County.

To promote geek culture and happenings for HGC member organisations.

To provide real and virtual resources for members to plan and promote their own businesses, organisations, events, and doings through each others’ client bases and networks.

To inform and educate the populace about all things geeky in and around Highland County.
